How far away from my plants should this grow light be?

How to use a distance guide

Distance matters more if this will be your plants only light source (which is what the following distances are based on). Keep in mind different plants have different light requirements, so start higher / further away and adjust closer or further away depending on the plants light requirements. Closer if growth is slow or leggy, further away if leaves look to be getting too much light.

Distance guide (15 watt)

75cms to 1.5 metres distance for seedlings, cuttings and foliage growth when small.

45cms to 75cms for higher-light requirements and once plants are established.

10, 15, 24 watt or 36 watt?

36 WATT

For a bigger collection, to cover a larger area, to mount higher up / further away for wider coverage, for a small greenhouse, for a large grow tent, or for plants that prefer very bright or direct light (including succulents and cacti), go for the 36 watt.

The 36 watt is also better for small trees and for fruit production for larger, established plants. The coverage area is larger and output more intense, so it can also go higher up than the lower wattage bulbs.

The extra bank of lights in the centre compared to the 24 watt offers higher light intensity, for up to small greenhouses or larger grow tents.

24 WATT

For a medium-size indoor plant collection or if you want two lights (which avoids plants growing towards one direction only), choose one or two of the 24 watt.

Watch the video below which shows the 24 watt. One or two 24 watts are the most popular choice for most indoor plant hobbyists (you can always start with one and get a second later).

10 to 15 WATT

For smaller collections, for using over a prop tank, for trays of seedlings or cuttings, for lighting up individual plant shelves, for use inside small grow tents and for baby plants and smaller-growing plants like African Violets > one or two of the 15 watt or 10 watt are ideal, with the 15 watt being the more popular of the two.

The 10 watt is the better choice when you need to mount the light closer to plants (such as over the top to cover one tray of seedlings or to light up one plant shelf), or for a smaller number of plants.

The 10 watt also fits the biggest range of lamps. It has the same standard E27 screw-in fitting as all sizes, but is not as wide or long as the 15 watt, so less conspicuous if you want a more aesthetic solution than can be hidden within most shades.

What to put your grow light in

Since Sansi have a standard NZ E27 screw-in fitting, you'll find they are compatible with most desk lamps, floor lamps and pendant cord kits.

However, grow lights have wider and longer bulbs than standard indoor lightbulbs so if you want a shade, look for a lamp with a wider than standard shade.

As Sansi grow lights are directional, a shade isn't required (see the video below showing the beam without a shade).

Although LED grow lights run cooler so don't have the same risk of burning your plants, they still need good airflow around the bulb, meaning you may need either no shade (recommended), or a wider than usual shade in an area with good airflow so things don't get too hot which risks burning out your bulb.

Heat is the main cause for shortening the life of an LED bulb.

Have a watch of the video below for an idea of size as the 24 watt (in the video). The 36 watt are a similar larger size. The 15 watt and 10 watt are small enough to fit with plenty of room around them in most lamps with shades. The 10 watt is a similar size to a standard round light bulb.

I strongly suggest buying your bulb before your lamp so you can take your bulb shopping with you to check the fit in-store - or to purchase your lamp from a store who is relaxed about change of mind returns if you find it doesn't fit - and keep your receipt!

If you prefer to hang it either from the ceiling or from an L bracket on the wall, I also have these pendant cord kits available in 4 colours that have E27 fittings and are rated for up to 60 watt bulbs so are compatible with the Sansi bulbs.

To get a better idea of the bulb size, brightness and distance from plants, have a watch of this video which uses the 24 watt size:

Included: Bulb in box as shown. Pendant cords or other accessories shown are not included (available separately).

Warranty: Sansi says their LEDs are rated to run for up to 50,000 hours in theory, BUT that doesn't account for conditions in our homes. Factors like heat, moisture, airflow and more can have a big impact on how long a bulb will last.

As you can tell from the price, Sansi are great value-for-money for an entry-level solution to boost light levels for houseplants grown indoors, but are not a high-end, premium solution.

In my own use at home I find I get 1 to 3 years per Sansi bulb and at that stage they usually still work, but slowly become dimmer over time (called lumen degradation, normal for all LEDs).

I provide a 6 month warranty on electrical items I sell (including Sansi bulbs), which covers manufacturing faults and defects. It doesn't cover wear and tear, accidents or faults caused by conditions. The consumer guarantees act also applies to home use.

Decent quality for the price
Color: Grey
Decent quality for the price. Other privacy screens were extremely out of my budget, but this looks and works just fine- I just needed something simple to place behind my couch to hide some clutter. It took me about a half hour to assemble, but it was easy enough. It might be due to my carpeting, but I don't trust that the screen would be stable enough to stand freely without falling. Thankfully my plan all along was to wedge the screen between the couch and a box of clutter anyway, so for me it works as l'd planned!

Overpriced but effective.
Color: Cream
I happened to get lucky and get a warehouse deal at an additional 30% discount. Even at $25, it feels a little overpriced. But it was easy to assemble and serves its purpose. If you line the Velcro up exactly, the panels sag, if you stretch past even, but where it still grips, they look pretty ok. It is very light and does fold very compact for easy storage.

Great price for a great product
Color: Coal Black
Excellent quality and great price to boot. Easy to assemble and folds up easily to be stored. We are using it as a privacy screen when we have company that needs to sleep on the couch and also to block off a hallway leading to a guest suite. It looks great and is as described in the ad

No.

This was horribly made and a nightmare to put together. You have to basically bend the bars to get the coverings attached. The sizes don't match. The stickers that label the parts are impossible to remove and if you do get them off theres a lot of residue left behind. On top of that once it was put together I noticed theres a big dirty foot print on it which is definitely not mine.

You have to add weight to it
Color: Coal Black
It does its job and it was easy to put together but it's a little on the flimsy side and it will easily be knocked down. So you're going to have to figure out a way to make the legs heavier? I used cinder blocks, single cinder blocks and it works just fine. Just know that it will knock over super easy
